Guess The Classic Car

Classic 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT

The Ferrari Dino 246 GT was a rolling homage to Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, as it offered a uniquely exhilarating mid-engined driving experience that was wrapped up in one of Pininfarina’s most balanced designs. Dino Ferrari, a trained engineer, had proposed a downsized engine range in the 1950s, but his untimely passing in 1956 meant that he never got to see his dream come to fruition. Eventually, his father Enzo approved the Dino sub-brand to serve as a gateway brand and to square off against cars like the Porsche 911. With its mid-mounted V-6 allowing for ideal weight distribution and a more streamlined nose, the Dino was a true sports car that was genuinely worthy of the Ferrari name.

To top it all off, its aggressive, Modena-bred exhaust note gave most owners, and the contemporary press, little to complain about. For 1969, the Dino’s 2.0-litre engine was enlarged to 2,418 cubic centimeters, giving the 206 its new 246 nomenclature. The Fiat-built, 65-degree powerplant featured an iron block with alloy heads and was enough to catapult the Leonardo Fioravanti-designed 246 GT into great sales success. Their responsive handling and free-revving engines characterized Ferrari well into the 1990s, giving the Dino a long-lasting appeal.

Daniel Schmitt and Co. Classic Car Gallery St. Louis is pleased to offer you this beautifully restored 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT, which is among one of the finest examples we have seen in many years! It is finished in gorgeous Nuovo Giallo Fly Yellow, with two-tone black and tan Daytona leather seats.

Daniel Schmitt & Co. Classic Car Gallery St. Louis presents 1956 Volkswagen Type 1 Oval Window Beetle

The Beetle, officially known as the Volkswagen Type 1, was originally constructed to be the German transportation for the masses vehicle, the same way Ford’s Model T was for America in the early 20th century. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the “Volks-wagen” or “People’s Car” had to meet four requirements laid out by the German Government; to be fuel efficient, carry two adults and two children comfortably, capable of 60mph and feature an air-cooled rear engine. Porsche and his staff tried various combinations with the aerodynamic “beetle” shape and ultimately it was the designated Type 38, with split rear windows that became the Type 60 or “KdF-Wagen” translated as the “Strength through Joy Car.”

After WWII the now British controlled VW Factory was rebuilt and the car slowly entered mass production. The Type 1’s unconventional appeal in the traditional large car market of the United States eventually brought in strong sales figures and resulted in VW producing more Beetle derivatives, such as the Type 2 Microbus, Karmann Ghia, the Thing and the Type 3 platform of air-cooled flat-4 engine vehicles. Eventually the sales trend of the imported VW’s caught the eye of American Auto Makers and resulted in the “Big Three” producing their own compact cars. This would do little to change that the American Public had been smitten by the “Bug.”

Daniel Schmitt & Co. presents 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL

Daniel Schmitt & Co. presents 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL – Coming up for public sale for the first time in over a decade, is the chance to own one of “The King’s” personal automobiles that spent time parked in front of Graceland (as seen in the image above). This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL was purchased new in 1970 in Memphis, Tennessee by Elvis Presley. The “King” of Rock’n’Roll was no stranger to high-end cars; he owned numerous Cadillacs, BMWs, Rolls-Royces, Lincolns, Ferraris, and a few Mercedes.

The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL for sale here is a top-of-the-line Sedan, which Elvis also purchased from Robertson’s Mercedes-Benz and signed for on December 21, 1970. The car left the factory with code 542 (Dark Red) paint, but that color wasn’t up to the “King’s” standards. He soon had it repainted in Alpha Crystal Blue Metallic, a color suspiciously similar to that of his Powder Blue 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Limo. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL is one of very few cars that Elvis was seen in on a regular basis driving around Memphis.

After Elvis’ death in 1977, his 280SEL was put on display at a prominent museum where it remained until earlier this year. The vehicle is still equipped with its factory options including air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power brakes, and a Becker Europa radio that is still in working condition. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL is well documented and comes with copies of the title registration, the original title (both of which bear Elvis’ signature), a copy of the original Bill of Sale, as well as a photo of the vehicle parked in front of Graceland.

Featured on eBay Motors Blog and UK’s Express, Elvis Presely’s Mercedes-Benz 280SEL is enjoying its own share of popularity –

“Elvis had a penchant for cars, and while it would be a stretch to call him a driving enthusiast, he definitely collected luxury models like most other people would stack up snow globes or Franklin Mint die-casts. This 1971 280SEL was purchased by Elvis at the tail end of 1970, a period which coincided with the six-cylinder version of the car starting to phase out of Mercedes-Benz dealerships in favor of the upcoming W116 redesign. The 280SEL joined Presley’s fleet of Cadillacs, Ferraris, and Rolls-Royces, but perhaps most importantly for Elvis fanatics, it was a car that The King was often seen driving around himself, rather than being chauffeured in.” Read the whole article here.

“Car fanatics and music fans are expected to battle it out to get their hands on Elvis Presley’s old Mercedes after it was put up for sale on eBay. […] The King of Rock and Roll bought the Mercedes 280 SEL saloon new in 1970 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was originally dark red but Elvis wasn’t happy with the colour and had it repainted Alpha Crystal Blue Metallic, a similar colour to his cherished Mercedes 600 Limo.He would regularly drive the saloon around Memphis and kept it until when it was put on Museum display.” Read the full article here.

To better understand this great American Classic, we look to the author of A Survey of The Classic Marques, R. Nichols. He states “The definition of a sports car is never easy. There are few cars which all observers would agree fit the bill, and in general tend to be of European, if not Italian, extraction. The list of American-built sports cars that fit into this sort of category is perhaps the shortest of all, with only two names that are guaranteed instant worldwide recognition. One is Shelby, of course, but it is Corvette that springs to mind first. Launched as a low-price competitor to the European imports in 1953, Corvette’s status and legend have grown over the past 30 years. Today it’s no longer the USA’s only volume-built sports car (although it was the first), but instead is America’s first – and only – supercar.”

By 1960, the Corvette had become a full circle sports car, having graduated from its six-cylinder, GT roots when it was launched in 1953. The 283 cubic inch V8 was available with a dual quad carburetor set up that increased horsepower output to 270. Independent front suspension kept handling in check and allowed the Corvette to run in circles with some of the finest marques from Europe on both the road and track. Styling was pure American, with loads of chrome and classic roadster lines, keeping with the Corvette’s sporting appearance.

The beautiful 1960 Chevrolet Corvette 283/270 Convertible offered by Daniel Schmitt & Co. boasts the coveted 270-brake horsepower V8 with the desired 4-speed manual transmission. Additionally, it is equipped with the factory removable hardtop, Wonderbar radio and accessory heater, allowing this Corvette to be enjoyed in all seasons. Unlike many Corvettes of this era, which were finished in jazzy colors, this car is presented in simple and elegant Tuxedo Black with silver coves and a black interior. This exact combination of color and the optional 270 hp 283 V8 engine would only have been produced on a handful of cars built in 1960.

Accompanying this Corvette are several awards from the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS), including a national Top Flight Award. The NCRS is regarded as the final word in Corvette authenticity, with judging standards that are designed to feature extreme attention to detail. NCRS awards are only given to those cars that meet the high standards of judging, performance and operation, meaning this exemplary Corvette is the one to buy. We are proud to offer this incredible Corvette to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who only wants the best.

Mercedes-Benz’s elegant Paul Bracq-designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced, in its many variations, through 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the two-door models—the 280 SE Cabriolet and Coupe—which were expensive, virtually hand-built automobiles in the great tradition of German craftsmanship. The acres of wood trim throughout the interior were all genuine solid hardwood, accented by the gentle use of brightwork; the leather upholstery was thick and comfortable; and both the ride quality and handling were (and continue to be) superb. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these cars rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising in all of the world’s most posh destinations.

The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Convertible for sale at Daniel Schmitt & Co. is finished in stunning Light Ivory with a gorgeous Cognac Tan leather interior and brown convertible top. A concourse level restoration was recently completed and this Mercedes is now ready to be driven or shown. It is equipped with many options including rare factory air conditioning, full leather interior as well as its original books, manuals, service records, build cards, warranty plate, tools and much more. We are proud to offer what we believe to be one of the very finest 280SEs that can be found on the market today.

DANIEL SCHMITT & CO. PRESENTS 1960 MASERATI 3500 GT COUPE BY TOURING

From 1952 through to 1957, Maserati cleaned up on the race track, winning seven World Championships and dominating Formula One, in large part due to lead driver Juan-Manuel Fangio. Emphasis then moved to road cars of the gran turismo class when the 3500 GT was introduced in 1957 at Geneva. The 3500 GT was powered by a 220-brake horsepower, hemi-head, 3,485-cubic centimetre inline six-cylinder, and it was available as either a 2+2 coupé or convertible. The coupé was wrapped in an aluminium superleggera body by Touring of Milan, whilst the convertible body was by Vignale.

The 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Coupe by Touring featured here is finished in stunning Dark Rosso Red with a beautifully preserved original black leather interior. This low mileage, highly original 3500 GT is one of just 257 examples produced and one of less than 75 examples remaining, making this Maserati one of the rarest in the world. Further, this magnificent motorcar was recently released from a large prominent collection and then underwent a full service by marque specialists that included a complete fuel system, brake system, and lubrication system overhaul. Accompanying this investment-grade 3500 is its Maserati classiche documentation as well as its owner’s manual. Seeing an Italian car from the 60’s with this level of originality is sure to make even the most discerning collector swoon. We are proud to offer this exceptional carbureted 3500 GT to the most sophisticated collector, investor, or enthusiast who only wants the best. Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013 and posting gains of 395-percent over the last 10-years. Ready to make an investment you can actually enjoy? Please contact one of our Daniel Schmitt & Co. expert sales consultants at (314) 291-7000 or e-mail info@schmitt.com for more information. Just in time for the New Year this stunning Ivory 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II is being prepped for takeoff, as it is being flown over to its enthusiastic new owner in Switzerland.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II is the absolute pinnacle of style and old-world craftsmanship. With extremely low production, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II is a rare automobile by any measure; they are the last of the separate-chassis cars from Crewe, England to be built. The Silver Shadow was the last Rolls-Royce manufactured that employed body-on-frame construction; the days of cars being hand crafted by artisans in Crewe are now just a fond memory. However, that care and craftsmanship distinguishes them from every other car ever created; the coach-built touches epitomize the style and grace associated with a classic Rolls-Royce and exemplify it as a rolling sculpture.

The 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II pictured here is finished in Light Ivory with a superbly kept tan Connolly leather interior and dark brown piping accent. This stunning Silver Shadow II has had only had one meticulous owner since new and is among one of the finest examples we have ever had the pleasure of offering. This impeccable Rolls-Royce has been driven just a mere 10,000 miles and virtually cannot be told from new! It comes equipped with power windows, power seats, power disc brakes, air conditioning and more. A recent complete service has been performed and this motorcar is now ready to join its new owner in Switzerland! Congratulations, we hope you enjoy this vehicle for many years to come!

Daniel Schmitt and Co. presents – 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT

For 1969, the Dino’s 2.0-litre engine was enlarged to 2,418 cubic centimetres, giving the 206 its new 246 nomenclature.

The example shown here is finished in gorgeous Nuovo Giallo Fly Yellow with two-tone black and tan Daytona leather seats. Previously owned by the editor of Autoweek Magazine, this magnificent motorcar was recently released from long-term ownership. The 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT offered here comes fully documented with its manuals, tools, complete service records from new, as well as factory correspondence letters. It is equipped with an AM/FM cassette player, power windows and 14” Cromodora wheels. This Dino recently underwent a complete service and would be the perfect addition to add to any premier collection. We are proud to offer it to the most particular collector, investor or enthusiast who demands the best.
